What this lesson covers
Step by step, in this order.
- 1A Rational Number is any number that can be written as a fraction a/b where a and b are integers and b≠0.
- 2Story: 12th‑century mathematician Bhāskara used rational numbers to divide land for farmers in Kerala.
- 3An Integer is a whole number without fractions or decimals, positive, negative or zero.
- 4A Fraction has a Numerator on top and a Denominator below the line.
- 5Terminating Decimal ends after a finite number of digits; Repeating Decimal has a block of digits that repeats forever.
- 6Convert 3/8 to decimal: 3÷8=0.375. Show each division step with units.
- 7Convert 0.75 to a fraction: 0.75=75/100=3/4 after simplifying.
- 8TRY IT: You need 2/3 cup of water using a 1/4‑cup measure. How many scoops?
- 9Recap: rational numbers = fractions, can become terminating or repeating decimals, and simplify to simplest form.

Doubts this lesson clears up
- A rational number is any number that can be expressed as a fraction of two integers.
- Fractions let us represent parts of a whole, which whole numbers cannot show.
- Terminating decimals end; repeating decimals have a digit block that repeats forever.
- Simplifying makes fractions easier to compare and use.
- To change a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.
- Cooking, money discounts, and measuring land all use rational numbers.
