What this lesson covers
Step by step, in this order.
- 1A set is a well‑defined collection of distinct objects; we write x ∈ A for membership.
- 2We list elements in roster form, like {1,2,3}, or describe them in set‑builder form, like {x|x is even}.
- 3The empty set ∅ has no elements; finite sets stop, infinite sets go on forever.
- 4Two sets are equal if they have exactly the same elements; A ⊆ B means every element of A is in B.
- 5The universal set U contains everything we discuss; we draw sets as circles inside a rectangle for U.
- 6TRY IT: Draw a Venn diagram for students who play cricket vs football. You need paper and a pencil.
- 7Union A∪B means in either set; intersection A∩B means in both; difference A‑B means in A not B; complement A' means in U but not A.
- 8Story: John Venn created these diagrams in the 1880s to visualize logical relations.
- 9The power set of an n‑element set has 2ⁿ subsets; for 4 elements, that's 16.
- 10Recap: definition, roster vs builder, empty/finite/infinite, subsets, universal set, Venn, operations, 2ⁿ rule.
How it looks
A real board, not a video.
This board is from a different Maths lesson — yours will look like this. She writes and draws while she explains, and stops to check you followed.
Doubts this lesson clears up
- A set is a collection of distinct objects, written with curly braces.
- Roster form lists each element explicitly, like {2,4,6}.
- Set‑builder uses a rule, e.g., {x|x is even}.
- The empty set has no elements; it’s a subset of every set.
- Union combines, intersection finds common, difference removes.
- Each element can be in or out of a subset, giving 2 choices per element, so 2ⁿ subsets.
