What this lesson covers

Step by step, in this order.

  1. 1Start with a puzzle: plants don't eat. So where do they get their energy?
  2. 2Plants get energy from sunlight. They trap light and turn it into food. That process is photosynthesis.
  3. 3Three things go in: sunlight, water from the ground, and carbon dioxide from the air.
  4. 4Inside the leaf is a green pigment called chlorophyll. It catches the light energy.
  5. 5The plant uses that energy to combine water and carbon dioxide into glucose—that's sugar. It's the plant's food.
  6. 6There's a bonus: oxygen gets released into the air. That's the oxygen you breathe.
  7. 7In 1771, a scientist named Joseph Priestley did an experiment. He trapped a mouse in a jar with a plant. The mouse didn't die. Why? The plant was making oxygen.
  8. 8This is why forests are so important. Plants feed themselves and give us the air we need to live.
  9. 9So photosynthesis is how plants trap light, make food, and give us oxygen—all at the same time.

Doubts this lesson clears up

  • Plants don't eat like you do. They make their own food from sunlight, water, and air using photosynthesis.
  • Chlorophyll is the green color in leaves. It's special because it catches light energy really well—better than other colors.
  • No. Without sunlight, photosynthesis can't happen. The plant can't make food and will eventually die.
  • Oxygen is released during photosynthesis. Every breath you take has oxygen from plants. That's why they're vital.
  • Glucose is a simple sugar. It's the plant's energy food. The plant uses it to grow and do everything alive things do.
  • Photosynthesis only happens in light. At night, plants rest. But they stored energy during the day, so they can survive.
